Oh, what a life in Crete! It's sunny, warm and as pretty as a picture. The biggest island amongst the gorgeous Greek Islands, Crete is a paradise that is even better than it looks on the Instagram feeds you've been wowing over.
Beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, fresh Mediterranean food and ancient ruins make Crete the perfect place for a European vacation. Village life in Crete is charming with locals going about life at a slow pace that makes you reflect on how important it is to have days of peacefulness.
The ancient Minoan civilization (predating the Greek civilization) once inhabited the heavenly lands of Crete. The Minoan (c. 2700–1420 BC) wrote in the undeciphered script called Linear A, which archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans discovered. They are still working on translating the words today. Mysteries like this are all around the Greek islands with stories of Greek mythology being woven into many experiences including trips and tours.
Chania City has a lovely old town and 14th-century Venetian harbor lined with colorful buildings and waterfront restaurants. There you can see a 16th-century lighthouse with Venetian, Egyptian and Ottoman influences. Nearby the nautical museum has lots of impressive naval displays. You don't need any plans, walk around and soak up the delightful atmosphere, pretty sights and seaside views.
Hikers will love the scenic beauty of Samaria Gorge that goes on for 18 km and is the longest trekking gorge in Europe. You need the whole day to conquer the six-hour hike from the mountain tops through the gorge and ending in Agia Roumeli by the sea. Then you catch a boat to a bus station where you can be transported back to Chania. It's a big trek but a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Crete is a beautiful place to take a boat trip and you can go island hopping with a group tour, charter a private yacht, go diving and snorkeling, take a romantic evening dinner cruise or relax at sea on a glass bottom boat. It is easy to catch a boat trip to nearby islands such as Spinalonga Island from Crete, where you can see a large fortress. If the sky is more your vibe, you can jump out of a plane on a tandem skydiving adventure with epic views of the Greek landscape and ocean.
